NTT Docomo Launches Digital Manga Platform Manga Mirai

NTT Docomo, in collaboration with Akatsuki Group, Media Do, and MyAnimeList, has announced the launch of Manga Mirai, a new digital manga platform that debuted on March 4, 2025 (Pacific Standard Time). The platform will offer English-translated Japanese manga, providing fans with a comprehensive selection of titles from publishers such as Kodansha USA and Square Enix.
At launch, Manga Mirai will feature over 780 titles and 11,000 volumes, including manga of popular anime series such as Wind Breaker, Around 40 Otoko no Isekai Tsuuhan Seikatsu (The Daily Life of a Middle-Aged Online Shopper in Another World), and Blue Lock. Additionally, the platform will introduce original manga titles and English translations of previously unavailable works, broadening the accessibility of Japanese storytelling for international audiences.
The platform aims to enhance the reading experience through both its website and a dedicated mobile app available on iOS and Android. Fans will be able to purchase manga on the service's website, with purchased titles accessible for reading on either the site or the app.
Manga Mirai is the result of a collaborative effort among key industry players. NTT Docomo, as the service provider, leverages its expertise in entertainment content distribution. MyAnimeList, a global anime and manga community with over 19.5 million registered users, will integrate Manga Mirai within its platform, enabling seamless access and purchases. Akatsuki Group contributes its expertise in system development, maintenance, and marketing, while Media Do is responsible for content acquisition, translation, and distribution.
"MyAnimeList is excited to be part of Manga Mirai," said Atsushi Mizoguchi, CEO of MyAnimeList. "We believe this initiative will enrich the user experience and open new opportunities for authors to connect with readers worldwide. Together with Manga Mirai, we are committed to spreading the joy of manga overseas."
The platform plans to expand its offerings by adding more titles from various publishers, including Yen Press, a subsidiary of the Kadokawa Group. To attract new users, Manga Mirai will launch a special discount campaign on select titles in the coming weeks, with further details to be announced on its website and social media accounts.
"The Japanese word 'Mirai' means 'Future,'" said Saori Miyahara, General Manager of NTT Docomo's Content Service Department. "Manga Mirai embodies our commitment to bringing Japan's renowned manga culture to the world and shaping its future. Through this platform, we hope to support creators while delivering incredible stories to global audiences."

Wonder how are they going to compete with MangaPlus. The library would be an obvious answer but if they are sourcing titles from USA publishers then it doesn't bode well. The likes of Yen Press usually just licence a popular series, C&D scanlations, slowly release a couple of volumes with subpar translation and then drop the title leaving it unfinished.

I was disappointed to say the least, why can not someone make a digital manga buying website where one can purchase and get a memorabilia of that same manga and ship it to us through mail, we get the manga to read albeit not owning sucks. But end of the day you get a physical thing you can touch and be a part of the community, But no all they want is money which I totally understand but this may be novel idea.
