Truck driver forced to show birth certificate claims racial-profiling

It sucks that this guy and his wife had to go through that, but what are the police supposed to do? If they didn't check, there would be a thread about how the police are allowing it to happen. He'll just have to carry his paper work with him and avoid shit like this again. Although, you would think his drivers license and SSN would be enough. :dunno:

I'm already in the works of a thread that shows the police are succumbing to liberal media bias enforcers about how they HAVE to start checking SSN, driver license, birth certificate, medical papers, dental papers, copies of their Speedway and Kroger Plus cards papers, and, last but not least, their Best Buy Reward Zone papers. Oh! And a monthly check of their McDonald's receipts.

And only then will I be confident that these are legal Americans!!!

Well the cop did nothing wrong per se....as he was making a check at a weigh station. In these case LE has much more latitude because of the circumstances.

What this case exemplifies though is the circumstance this new law makes allowable in normal everyday situations where no probable cause for questioning exists other than apparently appearance.

US Constitutional interpretations and case law precedence doesn't allow for it's citizens to be subject to that.

The biggest misconception some people have is that if some law is passed or voted on...that is the end of it.

It's not...if the new law or statute is challenged and found to be outside the protections/limits of our constitution..it will and should be tossed by the court.

I never understood why it was a big deal to try and remove people from this country who shouldn't be here to begin with. That's the true point of the law. If you're not a citizen, then you shouldn't have any rights (in this country) anyway. If you are a citizen, you're life might occasionally be inconvenienced by the racial profiling. As long as you can prove you belong here, you won't have any problems. This seems like a perfectly reasonable law to me. Not sure what the outcry is all about... :dunno:

I think that some of the outcry is that America was founded on the premise that anyone from anywhere could come here - remember the words "melting pot." (Not the restaurant). At least that is one of the arguments that's brought up when I speak to people about this.

They still can as long as they do so legally. Just like you can carry a weapon. As long as you do so legally.

I just thought you did by the defense you give to this whole issue of people being here illegally.

I simply respond to any issue I discuss on point. I don't know why people always think someone has a personal stake in an issue just because they respond in a discussion.

What ever happened to debating on principle whether you have dog in the fight or not?

For the last time...go through the thread if you must...it's not about protecting rights of illegals. But the rights of "legals".

Right. That's my contention also, then told "it takes so long, like ten years. They want a better life now."
All well and good, but they should still do it by the law.

It's just an incredibly stupid and insulting way to go about immigration reform, that's all.

The line between Arizona Illegal Harrassment and Abu Ghraib Abuse by the military seems likely to be crossed if this law is put into "execution"...

The ''authorities'' of the brave ''neo'' world should ask for the president's birth certificate. :1orglaugh

Yea, I thought that America was so unfair and unjust all of this time, why anyone would want to come here is anybodies guess. :dunno:

As it turns out, the gig ain't half bad after all.

You want my papers? Here...I have nothing to hide. Btw I have dark features and olive skin courtesy of my Balkan heritage so if I'm stopped I have no problem because I'm a citizen.

You can give up your right to remain silent upon arrest, against self incrimination, to confront your accusers, have a speedy trial, et al.

You are free to individually waive ANY of the rights and protections our constitution affords you.

Just because you are willing to doesn't mean others should be willing to. Find another way to enforce the law and curtail some crime that doesn't encroach on constitutional rights and protections.
